    I was pretty hooked on Wanda Vision until the sword episode. They solved the mystery way too early. I agree they should have let Vision play as Watson and should have kept the tv format with more clues and introduce sword in the second to last episode or remove them entirely.

    1.) I think a lot of people who like the anime may like it in comparison to the movie. I haven't read the comics, so I didn't know Stephen and Todd had more complex stories originally. Since it wasn't in the movie, I didn't miss it in the anime. Ramona, Knives, Roxie, and Kim all have more screen time, dialogue, and personality in the anime than they did in the movie, so to me as someone who hadn't read the comics previously I really appreciated seeing more of these female characters. 2.) I agree that Ramona doesn't technically fit the manic pixie dream girl stereotype because she isn't especially energetic and fun like they're supposed to be, but movie Ramona does feel very one dimensional. She barely has a personality of her own in the movie and she does feel like she's just there to be an interesting / edgy looking girl for Scott to become infatuated with which leads to *his* growth and development. Compared to the movie, I loved seeing Ramona have a personality and storyline outside of being the edgy girl that Scott has a crush on. Most of the critiques the anime was responding to, including the manic pixie dream girl critique, were also probably targeting the movie more than the comics. If O'Malley did have these criticisms in mind, he may have been making up more for the movie's flaws than the original comic's flaws.

      For Knives and Kim, their movie personalities and almost every line of dialogue they have also revolve around Scott. I actually do like movie Knives's arc of being broken hearted and obsessing over a boy until she grows at the end, especially because she's a high schooler and I think that's a very high school thing to do, but it does also mean her only role as a character within the story is to be obsessed with Scott. Even though her part was small, I liked seeing her practice music and join the band because I thought it made sense with how much of a groupie/ music enthusiast her character became in the movie. To me, having her play music herself was a step up from the movie bc instead of her just becoming an obsessed fan she developed her own skills for herself rather than just being infatuated with other people. 2.) Movie Kim pretty much only speaks to mean comments toward Scott (which he deserves). Compared to movie Kim, I liked that anime Kim had her own job and scenes with Ramona where she got to speak more than just bitchy one liners about Scott.

    My take on the show is that, this is about Beths need/want to connect to others or in other words belonging somewhere. The "autism" she has is just one element that disconnects her from other people. Just as being a woman in a mans world (which I praise the show for not going the route so many "strong female character stories go where their gender is their whole identity.) is also one element that separates her from others though its emphasized that its not her only reason. Another good example of her woman hood not being enough to connect to others, is when she hangs out with girls from her school and how she didn't fit in there either. Beth was abandoned as a child, when she finds a parental figure who she does connect with they disappear in her life, and the moments where she feels connected to others is when it involves chess. When she begins to abuse drugs during her matches, that was when things start to change in her life and she isnt alone, she develops a hyper reliance to it. Believing its tied to her success, thus her self worth. But its when she fails and people come together and help her at her lowest that, that belief begins to shatter. Her worth was never tied to the success she got from chess but it did bring her to people who would under stand her and see her beyond her weird quirks. Theres more that I can say, but thats my general read on the show. I looove beth as a character.

    A lot of great shows are desperate for the "filler" SU got. (And even it was rushed in the final season because they lost a sixth season by making a wedding as gay and uncensorable as possible and they will always have my respect for that) Take avatar for example, phenomenal show buty Zuko never gets any actual downtime with the Gaang. He never even says Toph's name.

    I wish they had figured out a better way to include Jolene that provided the complexity of their relationship. By removing the dark history, they watered-down her character and their bond to the point that Jolene’s character felt tokenized. They could have done a much better job with that. It wouldn’t need to be SA. But something more complex to do justice to the character and her relationship to Beth.

    The Beach City episodes are filler from the traditional definition, but not insignificant. Filler ≠ insignificant. Filler is good for breathing room and seeing characters in situations that don’t tense them up. It just so happens that Beach City is near-irrelevant to the overarching plot, but it is still important for world building. I definitely think some Beach City episodes are important, but you could definitely remove a handful of episodes without missing anything, Beach City or Gem related. These episodes are good for building the world and characters, but some don’t need to be here at all. You could definitely cut episodes like “Steven and the Steven’s” or “Rocknaldo”, which don’t focus on the plot, the world, or its characters (Gem or human), and still have many “filler-esque” episodes to enjoy.

    I think the real cost of genius that he was trying to allude to was the all consuming nature of it. The truth is you can only “have it all” if you’re willing to compromise. To truly be the best in the world at something or even just very highly skilled you will inevitably sacrifice relationships, additional interests, and a bit of your own wellbeing to get there. She might have friends who help her win the world championship and she does come out successful and happy with what she gained for her sacrifice but at the end of the day she is still going home alone to a big empty house and now has nothing to work towards because she’s already achieved the highest level of success in her field. The only place to go from here is down. Chess is all consuming for her and she seems happy enough with that but it doesn’t mean there isn’t still a price being paid. Chess gave her money, fame, and a huge sense of accomplishment and joy but it cost her a well rounded life with fulfilling relationships and other interests. I’m not arguing it’s a worse life or the wrong choice, just that there is a price.

    17:22 Even by the criteria you've set up for what makes something "not filler" Space Race has important character development for Pearl. Secret Team establishes that Gem Shards can still make body parts, relevant for the Cluster arc. Fusion Cuisine is a character introduction for Alexandrite (though she could've been introduced elsewhere sure) and Connie's parents. Winter Forecast, Open Book, and Steven's Birthday all serve as entries in Steven and Connie's character arc, with the birthday one being particularly relevant. Room for Ruby establishes why the Gem's don't have a spaceship to go after Steven in I Am My Mom anymore and how Eyeball got back to Homeworld I suppose most of them could fall under the argument of "you don't know this information is important until later with new context" but at least for me they still felt impactful on a first airing. Like you don't know *what* they're setting up, but you certainly know they're setting up *something.*

    Firstly, I love the smokey eye look 😍 Secondly, I think the format of expressing arguments as two opponents across the chess board is inspired. I think this allows you to present nuance, and raise thought provoking questions without the viewer thinking you're just offering the "correct" viewpoint. Sadly, I think that's how media criticism is consumed now - as though it's the marketplace of ideas. Well done, there's some excellent ideas and arguments in this essay.

    I made an edit of the series by chopping the outside perspective until vision gets out of the hex. I showed to by Boyfriend at the time and his experience was slightly better because of the mystery being extended beyond chapter 4, and I thought it was better too, in general. He also thought Wanda had eaten "Geraldine"😂, since her just vanished as we didn't see the outside world, and Wanda said she left with that weird expression of evil. The second part was basically another show, far less interesting for me because I didn't care much about the sword side. None of the less, I think it was an improvement of the experience.

    Here’s the problem with JUST your opening statement. If a movie is made from a book and takes that books name then you should be honor bound to tell people something like “loosely based on” or call your movie something else. Because people go in to see a story like Dune with the expectation that this is a faithful adaptation of the books… only get those 2 mediocre, adapted nonsense movies and will never trust you again….

    WandaVision makes me sad cause it was so close to being really cool. The whole show crumbled for me as soon as they returned to the marvel format. This video and others like it are so confusing. I genuinely don't understand what the objective here is. Like are you hoping an aspiring comedian who's watching will consult this video when they construct their own jokes? What reaction are you hoping to elicit?

    • @JamesWoodall
      @JamesWoodall 4 дня назад

      I'll take it as a sign of progress that you think it's obvious gay people are not rapists. But at the time Frank Carson was telling this joke, in the 80s and 90s, the UK was at a peak of negative sentiment towards gays. There was the AIDs crisis, Section 28, and, even though homosexuality was technically no longer criminalised in the UK, convictions for same-sex acts were almost as high as the 50s. A lot of the public's main exposure to gay men was through news of sexual scandals, often involving public restrooms. Normally consensual, but that's not an important distinction to a homophobe. It was not so obvious that sharing a bathroom with a gay man was not dangerous. Even without that context, homophobia in straight men often manifests as a fear of being sexually objectified by other men and a fear of being emasculated by penetration. You may know these fears are unfounded, but to homophobic people they're very real. You know how these days transphobes are terrified of sharing a bathroom with a trans person 'cause they think they're gonna get attacked, even though that never happens. It's the same sort of fear. It's these fears which this joke plays upon. Note, it never actually says gay men are rapists. All it says is bending over in a public restroom puts you at risk from homosexuals. It's down to the audience to fill in the blank as to why. If homophobia did not exist, nobody would make the connection to sexual assault. The joke is homophobic because it relies on the audience's homophobic fear.

    Yknow what’s even more strange? Wanda (in the movies) got her powers from the Mind stone, which means her influencing reality is a little strange since she didn’t get her powers from the Reality stone. I liked her when she just manipulated minds in Age of Ultron because it made sense for her. Wanda suddenly using reality stone powers makes no sense. Maybe theres something I’m missing but the movie version of her character should only be using mind altering abilities. If she instead got her powers from the reality stone I think her reality bending abilities would make more sense. This is why rewriting the MCU is very fun. You find plot holes everywhere. Also her brothers powers make no sense either, why would you get super speed from the stone? Unless it enhances a certain aspect of yourself into a power.

      They used comic ideas in a world that already had its own unique world building. When you do that you bring another world into the original one and mess up the rules you’ve already put in place. There has to be a strong set of rules in your universe or else everything gets messed up when you can’t explain something.
